Understanding lifestyle risks and the limits of intervention

One Health Conference
23-24 February 2012 in Davos, Switzerland

This 2-day event training will offer an introductory course on the emerging global phenomenon of regulating lifestyle risks, also called risk factors, such as tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity. Discussing the moral, philosophical, legal and political challenges facing any attempt made at regulating individual choices.


Who should attend?

The training is tailored for industry representatives, researchers and academics as well as policymakers and other interested parties, who have to answer to the growing calls for regulatory action on lifestyle risk factors and face the difficulty of formulating socially-acceptable and economically-effective policies.


Content and Case studies

Participants will be introduced to moral, philosophical and political debate on the limits to personal choice and state intervention. Case studies include:

• Tobacco control measures as a blueprint for lifestyle regulation?

• Labeling policies

• Nutrition, overweight and ‘fat taxes’

• Alcohol policies


Outcomes

Training Course participants will:

• Get familiar with social trends and debates around lifestyle risk

• Gain insights into the key emerging case studies

 • Understand the regulatory context shaping decision making

 • Understand the framework for mapping responses to future challenges around lifestyle risk
